In the latest MORI survey, there was a majority of support for water fl uoridation across all age groups in the population. The highest level of support (78 per cent) was among 16 to 24 year olds. Consultant in dental public health to Birmingham Health Authority, John Langford, commented: “This poll shows that there is still a massive majority of support for adding fl uoride to water to promote better dental health.” The questions were as follows: Do you think that fl uoride should be added to the water supply if it reduces tooth decay? Second was, Do you think there is fl uoride naturally present in water? First question after reading that is: Why did Langford use the word ‘still’? Was it in the wake of the York report not stating that it was a panacea for healthy teeth, but a concern of fl uorosis and people now are having second thoughts on fl uoride? It is also at this stage that I also add that Julie Kirkbride MP is on the panel for Mori and that she also supported the addition of fl uoride. We are told by South Staffs Water in a letter in this paper that it and the PCT carried out a public opinion poll in 1985 before adding fl uoride asking people those very same questions, but according to Strategic Health that covers the whole of the West Midlands, when we asked under the Freedom Of Information Act, it said there was no such undertaking. Fluoride is present in all manner of foods - water, tea leaves, meat, fruit, vegetables, milk, and poultry. So if you eat all these foods in a balanced way, you get the protection you need. But Langford ignores this information and he should be using his position to teach the nation better eating habits. What do you say Langford?

I agree with the letter headed 'Normal balanced diet is enough'
by Stan Francis on May 23.
We receive fluoride from pesticides, many medical drugs, industrial pollution etc and many people's bodies contain above the safe limit.
The World Health Organisation has said that no new fluoridation schemes should be started until a population's total fluoride intake is measured.
A study by Dr Andrew Rynne, who engaged an EU-accredited pathology laboratory, found seven out of ten people in County Donegal, Ireland, were getting too much fluoride.
Seventy-two per cent of people there were at or above the safe intake of fluoride in October 2007.
The safe level was based on the UK 'Food Standards Agency' guidelines.
Children living in fluoridated areas can suffer permanent unsightly mottling of teeth, called fluorosis caused by too much fluoride.
Studies have shown that hip fractures are higher in fluoridated areas.
Rather than needing more fluoride, most people receive too much of this chemical.
Children's teeth need a healthy diet and adequate vitamin D, calcium and magnesium.

Dear editor: Mr Wills, is right in what he says in last weeks edition, in that ‘we are getting more fluoride than we should be’ and a test would be necessary. But the NHS won’t pay for one, we’ve asked! The Australian government fluoridation clinical limits for young children on babies from 6 months to 4 years is .25mg/Litre, 4 to 8 years is .50mg/Litre, 8 years plus is 1mg/litre, the latter amount South Staffs and Severn Trent put in our tap water as standard. Mr Langford talks about the York University report carried out in 1999, but it stated that no satisfactory conclusion could be made on the long term effects of fluoride due to the ‘poor’ information supplied for analyses and Mr Langford knows this. A request through the House of Commons 27th March 2007 for an evaluation on the relationship between fluoridisation and thyroid disorders received the answer that there was no significant association, but only two studies were carried out. One study with a positive association, the other with a negative, it was therefore determined that further research was required, but was classed as ‘low priority’ with no update, but we are committed to a continuing programme of research on the effects of fluoridation on health. Meanwhile here in Bromsgrove we continue to drink fluoride and this I take to be the ‘research’ whereby in 20 years time analyses will state that they ‘were’ wrong and a large proportion of the Bromsgrove population now suffer with an anomaly of health problems now admitted to be associated with fluoridisation of the tap water. The people of Bromsgrove say until absolute evidence is put forward on the safety of this poison, then we immediately have it removed from our tap water supplies, a balanced diet, toothbrush and paste replacing it.

Fluoride is one poison and placater that will be increased in the water supply(alluminium sulphate is another/alzeimers cause) When the time comes 4mg is sufficient to send you delirious(1.5 gives fluorosis and we now get just above 1ppm in Bromsgrove which is 4 times the amount a young child should be getting according to Australia's dental institute). A gov't act has already been passed in 2003 that the gov't do not have to ask you if they can add fluoride to your tap water or at what levels...so there goes more of the rights you felt you had, should have had, but hadn't, but many of you still believe this is the best place to be...in the UK?..

Fluoride in greater amounts will reduce your life span, dieing at possibly 60 years, you will therefore not pull on health services and be a burden, your usefulness will be up to that age in adding tax to the system. The influx of people into the UK alone is already destabilizing the countries policies, tax is now applied to anything that will bring in more money to pay more benefits available to people that will not work cannot work because they have no skills to offer?...further, the learning skills will deminish and be only available to the people that have money and high positions in life...yes, the haves and have nots that have been spoken about at length.
The latest oil increase on prices attracts £millions to the gov't coffers and the oil producers(never had it so good they say), it could be spent on us, the elderly, but they are not interested in the elderly, you add no more tax to the system, you take 'out' wealth and with NHS not paying for sick people until they are about to step into the coffin, that's good housekeeping!

The world has changed, it's no longer a nice place to live, civilised countries are now worse off than non civilised due to their very state of existence...ARE WE CRACK POTS saying all this, well if we are, there's millions the same across the globe that say it every day..WHILST THOSE IN POWER SAY YOU ARE BEING SILLY!!..Thousands are now leaving the UK as they know that the UK has had it with more and more coming to our shores, murderers, drugs suppliers, no skills, terrorists, people plainly cannot survive under the increasing inflation they say is really at 7.2%(23/5/08), it's really at 20% plus and will increase as oil prices and increased road tax is added to your food, services etc!--YES IT'S THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE?

Sodium fluoride, a hazardous-waste by-product from the manufacture of aluminum, is a common ingredient in rat and cockroach poisons, anesthetics, hypnotics, psychiatric drugs, and military nerve gas. It`s historically

We’re being forced to ingest a poison I have long held the belief that all additives hold some dangers for us and should be used only in exceptional circumstances or not at all. Fluoridation of our water supply is unnecessary as children can be taught to clean their teeth with toothpaste which incorporates fl ouride. People like myself with dentures should not be forced to ingest this poison. Also additives that give food a longer shelf life - why? When people throw away vast amounts of food which sometimes comes with the ‘buy one get one free’ policy of supermarket promotions, couldn’t they just half the price of the product instead? This is Alan Johnson(above) Health Minister that ignores all medical information and reports, on that fluoride is a poison and no good for our health at all. He will soon force water companies(giving indemnity against any health claims from the public) to add this to the water supply 100% of the UK..(If you already suffer with kidney disease read this now>here< Kidney disease markedly increases an individual's susceptibility to fluoride toxicity. In healthy adults, the kidneys are able to excrete approximately 50% of an ingested dose of fluoride. However, in adults with kidney disease the kidneys may excrete as little as 10 to 20% and young children may only excrete 15% of an ingested dose - thus increasing the body burden of fluoride and increasing an individual's susceptibility to fluoride poisoning (e.g. renal osteodystrophy) and what is renal osteodystropy?....read and worry here<

The York University report showed there was poor evidence to make any conclusion about the effects of fluoride on the human body. Their belief was that the introduction of the chemical hexaflourosilicic into the domestic water supply amounted to a breach of medical ethics in that no one should be forced to have treatment against their will. May 2008: John Langford Worcestershire PCT consultant said he was gratified that the latest poll showed people were for dding fluoride to tap water. The poll questions were *if fluoride stopped tooth decay would you agree to it being added*did you know there was fluoride already in water......Question should have been*did you know you could get fluorosis of teeth, bones, colon cancer, sterility,child behavioural problems, skin problems, indigestion problems, if you know this, would you agree to fluoride being added to your tap water! That's the question you need to ask?...you will always get a positive to a question you would normally get a negative from, if you load/word/tailor the question first!..And you can trust the Department of Health and it's consultants with your health?..NOT LIKELY!

The gov't stated on 1985 that public consultation was carried out as to how people felt about fluoridated water in Bromsgrove and surrounding areas, but the West Midlands Strategic Health said there was no such public consultation in a letter to us in April 2008. It is the Strategic Health that's responsible for adding fluoride to your tap water, after first being advised by the DOHealth(Alan Johnson)

The side effects of fluoride in your body are many and many side effects do not show up till later in life.

Fluoride is a natural by product from factories, it's abundance is so great, they're thinking up all the time of how to rid themselves of it, ideal place is in tap water.
Watch a tanker load of fluoride arrive at the Water works, that tanker if it overturned would poison all people in that area...the handling of this stuff is trained to these operatives, they get very high wages for adding it to our water supplies.

The Water companies Severn Trent and South Staffs would not add the fluoride at first because they knew it was a lethal poison, so the Government gave them indemnity against any claim from the public...if it were safe why would they have to do that?

Water Companies are told by the West Midlands STRATEGIC HEALTH to add up to 1ppm( 1 part per million) of fluoride to the water supply, it cannot always gauge correctly when you view the test report results, so in some results it says 1.12ppm....It is admitted that 1.5ppm will give you fluorosis, not just of your teeth, but of your whole body, your bones absorb 90% of this poison.
With the addition of fluoride in tap water, 1.5ppm is easily achieved by eating and drinking in the normal way, cups of tea contain high amounts of normal fluoride...same as milk, poultry, mat,cereals etc...it's natural in most food we eat..AND WE ARE TAKING IN FAR TOO MUCH!

We asked the local NHS if tests could be carried out last month April 2008 via urine samples from the public, THEY REFUSED US POINT BLANK!

So there's the story, bit like a fairy tale story isn't it..BUT IT'S NOT!....and it's happening in your time, not your mother's, grandmothers time whereby you would have said, you'd have thought they would have done something about it?..Well it's in your time and right NOW!...

Dear Sir,

For the attention of Steve Hilton.

Fluoride in my tap water supply:

I understand that you can answer questions on fluoride addition to the tap water supply in Bromsgrove area and that it is your sole decision on applying this chemical and that no public consultation ever took place before you added it....but in 2003, action(an act) was taken to ensure that fluoride could be added anywhere in the UK without public consultation from that date onwards, would it be therefore correct to say that the addition of fluoride was in fact illegal in 1985.

It is also understood that many other Health authorities are refusing to add fluoride, could you ascertain for me from these other Health authorities why you feel it is necessary to add fluoride and others do not!

Could you advise also why Solihull with the same amount of fluoride in the tap water sees less rotten teeth in children than Birmingham with the same level of fluoride in their tap water please and that Bromsgrove also sees less rotten teeth than Birmingham.

Can you advise why the Water companies require indemnity against adding fluoride to the water supply, why would they want this, is it because it is in fact a poison.

Please can you state why you do not teach children to brush their teeth and receive a balanced diet to give the fluoride required for healthy teeth, it is understood that Bradford have now started a drive in Mosques to teach them the benefits of healthy brushing and diet.

Can you advise why you continue to add the fluoride when the York report in 1999 said that poor studies were furnished for analyses.

Can you state that there are no lasting side effects to consuming fluoride, as I have read that colon cancer, bone brittleness, children's behaviour patterns being affected, headaches, indigestion problems.

I have enquired if a test can be made on my own body for the fluoride effect and content but have been refused by my doctor because he says that the NHS will not do this test for me.

Lastly please advise that as there is now 1ppm of fluoride in the tap water, how much food and water can I consume per day before I am in the danger zone, understanding that 1.5ppm gives fluorosis.

I would appreciate your reply as soon as possible.

This request was made sometime ago to your department but no answer came forth.

What are the clinical signs of Fluorosis?
The effects of excessive Fluoride intake on the human body are not limited to bones and teeth. Therefore, having observed clinical signs of any one of Dental, Skeletal, or Systemic Fluorosis, the physician or dentist should be on the look-out for other manifestations of Fluoride toxicity in their patients.
Clinical Signs of Fluorosis;
1. Mottled Dentition:

Clinical Observation	The most "tell-tale" sign of chronic Fluorosis. Bilateral patches of white-yellow-brown mottling are caused by Fluoride mineralization (i.e. replacement of hydroxyl ion) of tooth enamel, typically during early childhood.
Diagnostic Methods	Degree of severity of Dental Fluorosis determined by the TF or Dean's Index, which ranges from 1 Mild (overall blanching) to 10 Severe (dark staining, pitting, and breakage). Direct visual appraisal, computer-aided evaluation of a digital or film photograph of the dentition taken under standardized conditions (i.e. using additional lighting and cheek spreaders), chemical analysis of available tooth material
Differential Diagnosis	Blunt trauma to the tooth surface, childhood episodes of malnutrition, gestational anitibiotic exposure, high altitude-induced amelogenesis.

2. Abnormal Tissue Mineralization:

Clinical Observation	Not as obvious as dental mottling, but the conversion of hydroxyapatite (i.e. the mineral constituent of hard tissues) to fluorapatite in bone involves essentially the same process. Soft tissues and articular surfaces may also be abnormally mineralized; however, loss of function may not be limited to joints that are typically susceptible to "wear and tear" injury. Whereas fluorosed soft tissues lose elasticity and take on a "thickened" appearance radiographically, hard tissues become brittle and degenerative, with X-rays showing overgrowth or decalcification of bone.
Diagnostic Methods	Range of motion testing, radiography, tissue biopsy for chemical analysis.
Differential Diagnosis	Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, calcific tendinitis, calcinosis.

Fluorosis is notoriously difficult to nail down with a diagnosis; however, it is a helpful practice to consider it a Fluorosis Purple Flag (as opposed to a red flag) in cases where;

the patient has consumed drinking water containing more than 1.5 mg/l over an extended period (especially during early childhood),
the patient has resided close to a possible point source of natural or anthropogenic F pollution during their lifetime (including in utero), and
the patient is currently complaining of, or there is a documented medical history of any combination of,

In the latest MORI survey, there was a majority of support for water fluoridation across all age groups in the population.

The highest level of support (78 per cent) was among 16 to 24 year olds.

Consultant in dental public health to Birmingham Health Authority, John Langford, commented: “This poll shows that there is still a massive majority of support for adding fluoride to water to promote better dental health."

The questions were as follows: Do you think that fluoride should be added to the water supply if it reduces tooth decay? Second was, Do you think there is fluoride naturally present in water?

First question after reading that is, why did Langford use the word ‘still’? Was it in the wake of the York report not stating that it was a panacea for healthy teeth, but a concern of fluorosis and people now, are having second thoughts on fluoride?

It is also at this stage that I also add that Julie Kirkbride MP is on the panel for Mori and that she also supported the addition of fluoride.

We are told by South Staffs Water in a letter this paper has that it and the PCT carried out a public opinion poll in 1985 before adding fluoride asking people those very same questions, but according to Strategic Health that covers the whole of the West Midlands, when we asked under the Freedom Of Information Act, it said there was no such undertaking.

Fluoride is present in all manner of foods - water, tea leaves, meat, fruit, vegetables, milk, and poultry. So if you eat all these foods in a balanced way, you get the protection you need. But Langford ignores this information and he should use his position to teach the nation better eating habits.

Editor Reply: Please read the two questions again asked in the Mori Poll. They did not say, if you knew this was a poison would you say yes to it being added to your tap water supply. Further they did not say if fluoride caused health problems would you say yes to it being added to your tap water supply. Mr John Langford knows very well that the York enquiry said that there was poor evidence provided to make conclusine decisions on if fluoride was affecting our bodies. But he said he was glad with the Poll outcome, if this man is a consultant for our health at Worcestershire Primary CARE, I for one have no confidence in his decision making at all...see here in the York report where they say there's poor evidence.

We read in the newspapers that more and more men are becoming infertile, children have behavioral habits at school and are now a great concern, cancers we never had we now have. Fluoride is a waste by-product of the fertilizer and aluminum industry and it’s also a part two poison under the UK Poisons Act 1972. Its basic ingredients is PROZAC (FLUoxetene Hydrochloride) and Sarin nerve gas (Isopropyl-Methyl-Phosphoryl FLUoride). In World War II, the Soviets openly admitted to ‘using fl uoride in the water supplies in their concentration camps to make the prisoners stupid, docile, and subservient.’ The fi rst occurrence of fl uoridated drinking water was found in Germany’s Nazi prison camps. The Gestapo had little concern about fl uoride’s supposed effect on children’s teeth, their reason for mass-medicating water with sodium fl uoride was to sterilize humans and force the people in their concentration camps into calm submission. Ninety-seven per cent of Western Europe has rejected fl uoridated water due to the known health risks. However here in Bromsgrove, we are being forced to drink it and Alan Johnson MP, Secretary of State for Health, is trying to fast-track the fl uoridation of the entire country’s water supply. I thought I had been drinking fl uoridated water for most of my life (I am 51). Am I right, or has the fl uoride in my toothpaste induced early dementia? Seriously, Bromsgrove and Birmingham children have been found to have the healthiest teeth in the UK. The two authorities were among the fi rst to fl uoridate their water. Coincidence? Mr Francis also seems to have picked up the Ladybird book of chemistry. ‘Fluoride’, if I remember my school chemistry lessons, refers to any compound of fl uorine. Just as chlorine is lethal to humans, as sodium chloride (salt), it is essential. Some fl uorides are no doubt harmful, but not, presumably, the one in water. As for inducing sterility, anyone who knows my family will fi nd that hilarious. My late aunt raised 12 healthy children on the stuff, and her second great-grand child was born this month. Of the 60 per cent left, industry uses around 90 per cent of the water supply (including farming). That’s 90 per cent of the 60 per cent of all the water you bothered to fl uoridate gone. Why are Ireland with about 74 per cent fl uoridation and England/Wales with about ten per cent almost the only countries in Europe adding fl uoride. It is not added in Northern Ireland or Scotland, nor to that in most European countries. It is a social crusade for some health professionals and the practice will spread countrywide after the Government pushed through legislation enabling health authorities to require water companies to add fl uoride to drinking water. The legislation relied heavily on misrepresenting the fi ndings of the York Review which the Department of Health funded. It said: “In 2000 the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York published a report of a systematic review of the evidence on fl uoridation, which concluded that the fl uoridation of water increased the number of children without tooth decay by 15 per cent and that children in fl uoridated areas had, on average, 2.25 fewer teeth affected by decay than those in non-fl uoridated areas.” That was not what the review said. What is the real reason? ‘Flouride is good for you, honest, trust us!’ So, for our own good, because the state of the nation’s teeth is of huge importance to those that lead us, they say fl uoride needs to be added to all water supplies. We have people living in poverty, suffering from Alzheimers and dying from cancer, but hey we must save the people’s teeth. There’s something wrong here, how many of you really beleive that the Government is worried about our teeth? If a real loving Government existed, working for the people, then teeth would be way down the list of important things to focus on, work on and spend money on and anyway, rotton teeth keep many in work and paying taxes. People with toothache pay taxes, so why is the condition of our teeth of such importance? They can’t be lying can they? They dont have other reasons do they? Perhaps fl uoride isn’t really for the good of our teeth. Another correspondent claims it does and that Bromsgrove and Birmingham children have the healthiest teeth in the UK, but that statement is only partially true. Bromsgrove children’s teeth are amongst the healthiest in the UK, but the teeth of children in central Birmingham, for instance, are almost the worst in the UK despite water fl uoridation. Social deprivation is the greatest infl uence on dental health. Research showing fl uoride could be harmful is dismissed but so, for very many years, was research which demonstrated the connection between tobacco and lung cancer. Individuals react differently, even to prescribed medication, which is why most medicines are accompanied by a very long list of potential side effects. Most will not experience any of them but, for an unlucky few, they could prove to be very harmful or even fatal. Fluoride may be tolerated by some, but for others it is thought to contribute to cancer, thyroid disease and other serious conditions, so why risk it? A basic rule of medical ethics is that no person should be treated without his/her consent, but adding fl uoride to our drinking water is indiscriminate mass medication for social reasons and a breach of that right. Why should the majority accept potential damaging side effects to their health as an alternative to educating the minority in dental hygiene? It seems quite bizarre for this poison to be set to be added to the water of even more areas of England, when almost all other countries in Europe have ceased to use it. This week we have asked Worcestershire Trading Standards to issue a court sumons against Worcestershire Primary Trust for putting poison into our drinking water, even though the gov't have said it is legal. The people were not asked, it's not a drug, so it must be an illegal medicinal water.

I do not understand why UK is even considering fluoridation when the American Dental Association are now saying that babies bottle's should not be made up with fluoridated water. This is criiminal. After 6 phone calls last week I am still none the wiser as to whether our water in Warwickshire has fluoride added since noone seems to want to discuss it!! I have been ill with an undiagnosed thyroid problem for most of my life and I now believe much it has been due to mercury and fluoride. The National Pure Water Association has repeatedly asked the UK Department of Health to cite one scientific or laboratory study from anywhere in the world which proves that fluoridation reduces tooth decay in humans. They have failed to do so. The fact is that there is not a single scientific or laboratory study from anywhere in the world which proves that fluoridation reduces tooth decay in humans. There are, however, hundreds of published scientific papers which show that water fluoridation is dangerous to human, animal, plant and aquatic life, which is no surprise considering the relative toxicity levels of the substance. That list of dangers to humans reads like a medical dictionary such are the effects noted in scientific papers from around the world. These include collagen disruption leading to breakdown of collagen in bone, tendon, muscle, skin, cartilage, lungs, kidney and trachea, and the inhibition of antibody formation in the blood and confusion of the immune system. Fluoride kills red blood cells and damages gastric mucosa resulting in the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It is implicated in genetic disorders, low IQ levels in children, pre-senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease, premature ageing and thyroid disorders due to its disruption of iodine in the body. Fluorides have also been used as drugs for modifying human behaviour and moods. It has also been argued that fluoride increases cancer rates. In a recent study it was found that, pro-rata, 40% more people contracted bone cancer in the Republic of Ireland, which is fluoridated, compared with non-fluoridated but otherwise similar Northern Ireland.

This must be stopped, there is growing evidence that the immediate effects of fluoridation have adverse effects on the pineal gland, endocrine system with long term adverse effects on bones and teeth. I have personally written to Allan Johnson asking who will be held responsible since the laws governing the supply of water have been radically changed to mitigate any legal liability of the water companies. The BDA are quick to point out how well children in Birmingham and the North East do with less tooth decay but fail to point out the statistics and research which show that these areas have the highest rate of children born with thyroid problems, an illness which is known to be caused by excess flouride. I am a dentist who used to work in Birmingham. I saw for myself the benefits of fluoridation for my patients. My children also benefited. When I moved to Yorkshire I was struck by the poor state of dental health. Birmingham and Newcastle have been fluoridated for over 40 years. Nearly three quarters of the water supplies in the USA are fluoridated and a programme is underway to deliver fluoridated water to 18 million more people. It is about time that people in other parts of the UK received the benefits of fluoridation.

Fluoridation uses fluoro-silicate chemicals (a waste product from the fertilizer industry). It includes 1ppb of arsenic and 3ppb heavy metals.

The eruption of permanent teeth is delayed by one year .Therefore data comparing decay rates is only valid when age corrected ie. comparing 12 year old children(non fluoridated) to 13year olds(fluoridated) reveals that there is little difference in decay rates! Fluoridation is an outdated and ineffective method of preventing decay.Not one life should be lost in this unscientific mass medication! As a past president of the Australian Dental Association(SA) it is my duty to warn the public of the dangers of fluoridation. The long term effects of fluoride in bones is poorly researched.Claims of total safety are reckless and unproven. Oh my god, if you value your health, just say no to poison. Flouride is caustic like bleach. Its a by product of fertilizer and a too toxic to dump anywhere but in the Irish drinking water? One percent is not justification for poisioning the population. Natural occuring flouride is not what they will put in your water folks. Say NO! Its so poison they have to submit the routes the trucks take prior to it being shipped to the water treatment facilities in the States. Does the Government have a scheme by which to reverse this fluoridation for individual cases that it is contra-indicated? Editors for "Scientific American" believe recent studies suggest that fluoride raises the risks of disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland, and in general â€œscientific attitudesâ€ about fluoridation may be shifting. I really hope this doesn't go ahead as: There is considerable evidence that fluoride does not reduce tooth decay. There is considerable concern that fluoride is linked to a wide range of medical disorders. Fluoridation of water supplies is enforced mass medication. It is an infringement of human rights and medical ethics. Whenever this issue comes up they base their whole argument on the difference between Birmingham and Manchester. Never mind there could have been other reasons why Birmingham performed better - more funding or greater awareness and campaigning perhaps? Lets just say that adding fluoride does help - it doesn't help enough to combat kids eating junk - they will still get cavities! I will be so angry if this happens. Studies have shown that the any beneficial effect fluoride has, is topical ; meaning that you should add it to your teeth directly, the fluoride in water would have no effect .

Surely the children that the government are trying to target with this scheme are children who drink very little tap water anyway. Any one claiming that any consumer product has medicinal properties is a criminal offence if that product does not have a medicinal marketing authorisation. Since the Regulator has refused to recognise fluoridated water as a medicinal product, any person (and especially a health professional) advocating the use of fluoridated water to prevent tooth decay should be reported to yourselves who are the local Trading Standards Officers for Worcestershire and we advocate that the PCT for Worcstershire is brought before a Court to stand trial. Water is a food, and 'medicinal waters' are excluded from regulation under the Water Quality Regulations, so Trading Officers are the relevant officials authorised to take action under the Food Safety legislation. Dear Sirs,FLUORIDATION OF DRINKING WATER: Thank you for your emails of 2nd and 13th May 2008 regarding the fluoridation of drinking water. Many of the points you raise relate to the Government's policy on whether or not drinking water should be fluoridated. National policy on drinking water fluoridation is the responsibility of the Department of Health rather than the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), hence the reference by colleague Mr Jheeta to information held on their website. The Inspectorate are not involved in the decision about whether or not a water supply is fluoridated - this decision is made by the local Strategic Health Authority. The content of drinking water legislation is a matter for Defra (the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) which is the parent Government department of the Inspectorate. The Drinking Water Inspectorate is an independent regulator responsible for enforcing the requirements of drinking water legislation. This should perhaps have been more clearly explained in the previous response. I hope this clarification, together with the information provided below answers your query more fully. Regulation of public drinking water Public drinking water is not regulated under food safety legislation as suggested in your email, but there are specific laws relating to drinking water quality. Water companies have a duty to supply wholesome drinking water under the Water Industry Act 1991 (as amended) – “the Act”. The term wholesome is defined by the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000 (as amended) – “the Regulations”. With regard to fluoride, the Regulations specify that in order to be wholesome public drinking water must not contain more than 1.5 milligrammes of fluoride per litre of water (1.5 mg/l). This figure is based on the requirements of the European Directive on the quality of water for human consumption and also the World Health Organisation’s guideline value for drinking water. The Act allows for drinking water to be fluoridated at the request of the Strategic Health Authority provided certain criteria are met, for example that only specified chemicals are used and (more recently) that the public are consulted before a new fluoridation scheme is introduced. Where drinking water is fluoridated, water companies must also meet the requirements of the Code of Practice on Technical Aspects of Fluoridation of Drinking Water Supplies as published by the Inspectorate in 2005 (see: www.dwi.gov.uk/regs/infolett/2005/info0505.shtm). The requirement for drinking water to contain no more than 1.5mg/l of fluoride applies regardless of whether or not water is fluoridated. The Inspectorate’s records show that there have been no exceedances of the fluoride standard between 1995 and 2007 (inclusive) in South Staffordshire Water’s Hayley Green in which your postcode (B62 0PJ) is situated. The table below shows a summary of the results for fluoride for the last 5 years.

Where water fluoridation is carried out in line with the requirements of the Act, and the drinking water meets the quality requirements of the Regulations then the supply of this water is in accordance with the current legislation. Water unfit for human consumption You state that you consider your drinking water to be unfit for consumption due to the fact that it is fluoridated. Section 70 of the Act makes it a criminal offence for a water company to supply water that is unfit for human consumption. However the Act provides a defence for the water company if it can show that it had no reasonable grounds for suspecting that unfit water would be consumed or it had taken all reasonable steps and exercised all due diligence to secure that water was fit for human consumption on leaving its pipes. The decision as to whether or not water is “unfit” is taken by the court hearing a particular case, not the Inspectorate.

Where fluoridation is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Act, and drinking water quality standards are met, then the Inspectorate would have no grounds to consider initiating proceedings for water unfit unless the water supplied was proven to be harmful to human health and there was evidence that the company had not been duly diligent in the supply of that water (including any arrangements for fluoridation). Fluoride as a medicinal product The control of medicinal products is the responsibility of the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) – more information is available via their website www.mhra.gov.uk. It is for the MHRA to determine whether or not a product constitutes a medicine and how it should be controlled. The Drinking Water Inspectorate does not have powers under legislation relating to the safety of medicines. Public consultation You state in your email that no public consultation took place when fluoride was added to your water supply in 1985.

The requirement for a Strategic Health Authority to carry out a consultation prior to the introduction of any new fluoridation schemes became law as a result of amendments introduced by the Water Act 2003. These amendments were not retrospective and therefore a fluoridation scheme beginning in 1985 would not have been subject to the same requirements. I trust the above gives a fuller answer to your enquiry, however please do not hesitate to contact the Inspectorate should you require further information regarding drinking water quality or its regulation.

Notes-23rd May 2008: We are now in the process of contacting the West Midlands Strategic Health as they are the people that allow this fluoride to be added to ourtap water supply:- We are asking why after the York report stated that the information to make clear decisions was in fact poor information, that fluoride is still being added to our tap water supply.

What the 'York Review' on the fluoridation of drinking water really found

A statement from the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD).
In 1999, the Department of Health commissioned CRD to conduct a systematic review into the efficacy and safety of the fluoridation of drinking water. The review specifically looked at the effects on dental caries/decay, social inequalities and any harmful effects. The review was published on the CRD Fluoridation Review website and in the BMJ in October 2000.
We are concerned about the continuing misinterpretations of the evidence and think it is important that decision makers are aware of what the review really found. As such, we urge interested parties to read the review conclusions in full.
We were unable to discover any reliable good-quality evidence in the fluoridation literature world-wide.
What evidence we found suggested that water fluoridation was likely to have a beneficial effect, but that the range could be anywhere from a substantial benefit to a slight disbenefit to children's teeth.
This beneficial effect comes at the expense of an increase in the prevalence of fluorosis (mottled teeth). The quality of this evidence was poor.
An association with water fluoride and other adverse effects such as cancer, bone fracture and Down's syndrome was not found. However, we felt that not enough was known because the quality of the evidence was poor.
The evidence about reducing inequalities in dental health was of poor quality, contradictory and unreliable.
Since the report was published in October 2000 there has been no other scientifically defensible review that would alter the findings of the York review. As emphasised in the report, only high-quality studies can fill in the gaps in knowledge about these and other aspects of fluoridation. Recourse to other evidence of a similar or lower level than that included in the York review, no matter how copious, cannot do this.

Why do They add fluoride?..What do they get out of it?..Is there another reason?..READ ON>>> Question:-But why would our wonderful governments be doing something like this that is so bad for the people? We know now the more fluoride they pump into us, the more docile we become and easier we are to control, as if TV wasn’t enough. A low birth rate means fewer people that governments have to control. The more cancer they can create means that people die younger stopping all these old people from clogging up the system and draining resources. Conspiracy theories aside, one of the main reasons is money. Whole empires have been built upon fluoridation, people are getting very rich off of it and their money will make sure that they stay where they are . The only way it will ever be stopped is if the truth gets out to the larger population.
